Mud, Sweat & Tears has been located on the corner of West 46th Street and 10th Avenue in the Hell’s Kitchen neighborhood of Manhattan for 32 years. Our full-exposure storefront streams sunshine into the workspace and retail area — giving it a bright, uplifting and open feel.
Our studio offers a comfortable, “old-school” environment and we are often sought as a movie, TV and commercial location. Many of our clay pieces have been featured in advertising, films, television and on Broadway. And we’ve been showcased in national media, too, including Live with Regis and Kelly (2009-ish), The View (spring 2013), and “When Dirty Hands Act as Therapy” (The New York Times, Neighborhood Joint, 2013).
We have always made health and safety our priority. Procedures are communicated clearly, and each student and studio potter pitches in with a task before leaving. All of our clay is non-toxic and our glazes have been leach tested and declared food safe. We’re known throughout the industry for maintaining a clean studio.
We offer customers a number of program formats: two-hour private wheel-throwing lessons, Drop-In Saturday handbuilding, children’s classes, 10-week wheel-throwing courses at every skill level, and 10-week handbuilding courses.
We have taught generations of craftspeople clay skills and have celebrated weddings and births and enduring friendships along the way. We are well known for our rigorous teaching skills and close attention to our students’ progress. After completing the full program of coursework, many of our students stay on as studio potters who rent space from us in order to continue developing their craft independently.
